Open Lectures “Longtermism: the Philosophy for the Future” (dr Jakub Synowiec) 22.04.2024
Longtermism is a new position in philosophy. In it's strong version it is the view that contemporary people have the moral priority to positively influence the long-term future (even at the cost of present people). Longtermism has been popularized by Oxford philosophers, such as: Toby Ord, William MacAskill, and Hilary Greaves. It has also received much attention and support from techno-bllionaires, including Elon Musk. The roots of longtermism can be found in the writings of Derek Parfit, Peter Singer, and Nick Bostrom. This new philosophy is becoming more and more influential. The open lecture aims to present the idea of longtermism, the main arguments supporting it, some of the practical consequences of an individual accepting it in their life, and how it can be an inspiration for public policy.
