07.06.2023 Final Open Lecture 2022/23 [June 07, 18:30 CEST]

05.06.2023

We are finishing our cycle of Open Lectures of the Summer 2023 with dr Hernan Guerrero-Troncoso and his lecture: "Everything, all at once, but than again in succession: Some notes on God's foreknowledge of future events"

This conference intends to show how divine foreknowledge (which is to be considered as infinite, because God's intellect is infinite), is not opposed to freedom and contingency. The problem takes the question about the truth of sentences that deal with events that haven't yet occurred (for instance: has the sentence "a naval battle takes place somewhere" always been true if somewhere a naval battle has taken place, although this battle could have not taken place?) and places it in the divine intellect. In this sense, not only God already knows everything that has happened, everything that happens, and everything that will happen, but also what could have happened before and what could happen now and in the future. Given that foreknowledge, how could we talk about freedom and contingency? In order to explain that divine foreknowledge of future contingents is not opposed to freedom, we will follow John Duns Scotus' account on this matter, and explain what the notions of contingency, necessity, and freedom mean, from a Scotistic point of view.
