Reverend Professor Władysław Zuziak is the Chair of Ethics and the Former Rector and Vice Rector of The Pontifical University of John Paul II, as well as the Dean and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy. He is currently a director on the Executive Board of the International Center for the Study of the Phenomenon of Solidarność.
Fr. Zuziak will introduce the crucial moments which allowed for the emergence of solidarity as a new cultural phenomenon in the Polish socio-political space. The discussion will include the evolving movement of the Polish workers and the influence exerted by the Polish intelligentsia, largely represented by Catholic thinkers. From there, Father Zuziak will indicate the inspirations from the Gospel which appeared in the shaping of the Solidarity movement thanks to the activities of Karol Wojtyła and Józef Tischner. This will lead to an outline of the development of Solidarity’s moral philosophy during the spontaneous collaboration between the workers’ elites and Catholic philosophers (primarily Tischner) and the gradual subsequent departure from the ethos of solidarity during martial law and in the period of the political transformation after 1989.
