St. John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801–1890) was steeped in the British empirical tradition, especially in the thought of John Locke (1632–1704) David Hume (1711–1776). Students shall learn the decisive blow that Hume struck against realist metaphysics and epistemology and how Newman responded both to Locke and Hume from within the British empirical tradition. Because Newman works within the British empirical tradition, it shall be seen that his is a truly modern epistemology, rather than one merely occurring in Modernity that by-passes the challenges peculiar to Modernity. Newman’s response establishes a metaphysics of the imagination, thereby creating a Catholic alternative to Aristotelian-Thomistic metaphysics of the intellect.
Kursy przeznaczone są dla studentów studiów magisterskich i studentów programu Erasmus na UPJPII, zapraszamy również osoby z poza naszej uczelni.
